How to be a Professional Model
10 Easy Steps
  1. Let your husband, boyfriend, girlfriend be just that! They are not MANAGERS! Just because this person is your friend does not mean they know how to manage your business. Modeling just like anything else is a business and a manager needs to make sure the business is running and making money. If you have a personal relationship with someone they cannot be unbiased nor can they be objective of your work to make you a better model. In most cases a photographer will not want to work with a personal friend but a professional photographer will not mind working with a real manager.

  2. Pay attention to the time but don't be a clock watcher! Never be late for a booking. It tells the photographer, client and MAU that you don't respect their time. Being late will usually result in a tense situation right from the start. In an industry where you need a good working relationship with each other, why start out on the wrong foot? The second part of this is not to watch the clock every 5 minutes. If the shoot s scheduled from 2 - 4 then it is ok to make sure the client / photographer knows you need to leave shortly after 4. It is not ok to remind the photographer every 30 minutes. This too will result in a hostile working relationship and in the end it is you that will suffer.

  3. Your attractive but you're not the only one! Basically this goes to having a positive attitude before, during and after your shoot. Just like any profession, you can be replaced. The best thing to do is approach everyone connected with the shoot in a professional and polite manner. This does not mean allowing anyone to get anything over on you it just means do it with a smile. When you are working with a photographer they may have a technical or equipment issue, roll with it and allow the photographer to fix the problem. Keep in mind if you have a bruise or bags under your eyes it is the job of the photographer to make you look your best.

  4. Get all the information upfront! Too many models show up for the shoot and have no idea what they are going to be doing there. If you have a manager then it is your manager's job to get all the facts and make sure you are prepared. If you are doing it yourself then come up with some basic questions that you want to know and simply email it to the photographer. The photographer will reply and you will have your answers. This almost sounds too simple but you would not believe how many times models show up and nobody told them to bring shoes! No matter how pretty you are barefoot in a dress is not good!

  5. Bring an escort! This is where you can have the personal friend be involved. If the photographer is professional then he/she will not care if you bring someone. In some cases the photographer will ask the friend to sit in another room. This is ok because the friend will sometimes distract the model. Your escort should have their cell phone with them and be in a position where they can hear what you have to say. This way if you need something they are right there. The escort besides sitting around should otherwise be ignored. The last thing a photographer likes to hear is a model asking the escort what they think. I'm not trying to be rude here but you are a professional model and the photographer a professional too. The escort is a driver in this case and has no place in a conversation between two professionals. As a model you need to manage your escort's expectations by telling them ahead of time to be seen but not heard!

  6. Contracts and Documents! The photographer, most of the time will supply you with a model release. If you have a manager then he/she should have already read the contract and approved it. If you are doing this on your own then you need to look over everything. We always get a copy of the contract before hand so we can look it over. This is a good practice because you don't need any surprises after traveling to a shoot. If you are getting pictures then you should also sign a transfer of rights so you and your manager / webmaster / promotional companys can also use the images to promote you. Remember after the release is signed the photographer legally owes you nothing unless it is documented!

  7. Show up clean! Some people would laugh at this one but a lot of models come with dirty hair or old makeup and sometimes not showered. Find out how the photographer wants you to show up and make it happen! Most of the time if there is going to be a makeup artist then the photographer will ask you to shower and have no makeup on. This also means no lines or hair. Make sure you are not wearing tight clothing like bras, socks and other things that will leave marks on your skin. If the photographer has to wait for the lines to go away before shooting then expect to stay longer to make up the time. As for hair, make sure you know what type of shoot you are going to and shave / trim / wax accordingly. Armpits and legs are a MUST!

  8. Drinking, smoking, cell phone and drugs! Most photographers are very hospitable and will offer breaks for drinks and if you smoke a smoke break. Leave this stuff in the car or at home. Bring your bottle of water or soda and have your escort watch it for you. When you take a small break get a sip of your water and then get to shooting. This is a simple transaction, you are paid to model and the photographer is paid to shoot. The more breaks you take the longer the shoot may go. Also if you take a lot of breaks then you may not be used by this photographer again. You escort should have your cell phone and unless there is an emergency then there is no reason to be on the phone. If you have a manager they may call to check in. Have your escort answer and tell your manager everything is ok or not ok. DO NOT DO DRUGS OR DRINK ALCOHOL!!! There is never a reason to be drunk or high on set. If you need to take something to loosen up then you need to switch professions. You are already in a compromising situation why make it any worse?

  9. Piercings! Prior to the shoot you or your manager should have addressed your piercings with the photographer. It is up to the photographer and the client to ask you to remove your piercings. If you are unable and the photographer feels strongly then be prepared to loose the booking. If the photographer has no issue with the piercings then bring a selection and maybe you can incorporate them into the shoot.

  10. Limitations! This is the simplest one. You know your limitations, it is up to you or your manager to make sure the photographer knows them too. Do not wait until you are asked to cross them, set your limitations upfront! Remember it is your body and nobody can make you do anything with it that you do not want. It is only money and there is a lot more of it out there so don't sell yourself short!
